Features To Look For In Bathroom Scales

Picking the right set of bathroom scales really does depend on what you and your family will use them for. In my household, for example, we have the Salter Mechanical bathroom scales – they do the job and best of all we do not need to worry about ever replacing the batteries! Furthermore, my partner and I do not need the extra features, we just want to weigh ourselves from time to time for progress. Here are some of the features to look for in some good bathroom scales:

Accuracy – This of course is crucial and really does depend on how good the sensor is and the type of scales you have. For example, a mechanical scale will have a “comfort wheel” which allows you to manually set the scales to 0. Most digital scales will automatically start at 0 which is helpful. If pinpoint accuracy is something you need, I’d recommend looking at the “high accuracy” digital scale models.

Features – As you will likely already know, there are several different types of bathroom scales (listed below). And with each type, they have different features. For example with mechanical scales they simply allow you to weigh yourself. However, with digital scales, you can set the type of metric you’d like to weigh yourself with, set goals – some even let you track your statistics with an app. As mentioned earlier, in order to pick the right scales, it will all depend on what you need them for.

Some kind of Warranty or Guarantee – A fairly obvious one but still, definitely worth a mention. Typically ALL products (though obviously not disposable ones!) not just bathroom scales, offer some kind of warranty. But the length of the warranty may vary. Usually, you will get around a warranty of 2 years but before you purchase, be sure to thoroughly check for a warranty and the terms of that warranty in detail.

Design – A set of bathrooms scales for many people are bathroom accessories. Most bathroom scales are neutral colours to match most typical bathroom colours, but that said some of them may not look the best or how you’d want. And if you are stepping on to these scales every day, you might want to invest in something you like. Typically the lower budget mechanical scales will not be as flashy as digital or smart scales for example.

Maximum Capacity – Different scales have different maximum capacities of weight. While some can handle as much as 180 kg (400 pounds), others simply cannot handle that. Be sure to double-check the scales just in case if this might be a concern. For example, some mechanical scales have a maximum capacity of 133kg (293 pounds) which might not be suitable for some people (like bodybuilders etc).

Types of Bathroom Scales

There are several different types of bathroom scale that exist in the market. We chose to review a variety of the different types of scales. For those that might be interested, I will go through the various types below!

Mechanical/Analogue Scales – These are the type that many of the younger generation would call olden day scales! They are simple, and are not powered by electricity or batteries but by a spring that reacts to the amount of weight that is applied thus moving the dial. The benefit of this is that you do not have to worry about having to replace the batteries! (Hence why I have one!)

Smart Scales – The more premium and expensive, these scales allow you to track your health statistics via an app. Your mobile connects via Bluetooth to the scales which allows you to constantly keep track of your health. The Eufy BodySense model is an excellent smart scale that allows you to keep track of 12 different health measurements.

Digital Scales – Digital scales make it very easy to determine your body weight. The numbers are usually very large, easy to see and the screen is usually backlit, making it near impossible to make a mistake when reading the scale. Also most digital scales will keep the weight displayed on the screen so that even if you move off the scales you know what your weight is.

Body Analyser Scales/BMI Scales – While most people (like me) are content with simply knowing just their body weight, if you were trying to lose weight or gain muscle, you might want to choose a scale that can measure your BMI and other metrics. This allows the scale to quickly tell if you if you are under or above your ideal weight for your height and makes it easy to work towards your goal of gaining mass or losing weight.

How Often Should I Weigh Myself?

This depends on several factors. Things like how active you are, what your fitness goals are etc. If you are trying to lose weight and you are very active, you may want to check every few days or so – even daily. If you are not that active but interested in keeping fit, then maybe weekly or so. I currently am trying to bulk up a bit and since I am going daily and eating quite a lot of food I like to check daily to see if I have gone up a bit! This helps keep me motivated – even if it is by like 1 gram!

How Can I Get The Most Accurate Weight Measurement?

Ensuring that you get the most accurate measurements/figures can be quite annoying, especially when trying to reach a specific weight orientated goal. Here are some best practices to follow in order to achieve this:

• Try to leave a period of at least 3 hours of eating or tough exercises before taking weight measurements.
• Before weighing yourself, ensure that the scale is placed on a hard flat surface to avoid any discrepancies.
• Ensure that you are wearing nothing heavy and out of the ordinary (like shoes or trainers etc).
• Aim to stand on the central area of the scale.
• Weigh yourself several times and average the results. For example, if you weigh yourself 3 times and you get these results:
  • 1) 70kg
  • 2) 71kg
  • 3) 71kg
  • Next, calculate the average ((70 + 71 + 71) / 3) = Average (70.6kg)

As it will vary with most types of manufacturers the best thing is to double check the manual. That said, if you turn the scales upside down you will see where the batteries are stored. You might need a screwdriver to get access to the batteries. Below is a helpful video example of someone changing the batteries of their bathroom scales.

How Often Would I Need To Change The Batteries?

This would depend on the type of scale you choose to get. For example, the mechanical scales do not require any batteries. Digital scales and smart scales are battery powered. However, smart scales use a lot more power than the digital scales, as they are connecting via Bluetooth or Wifi and doing a whole lot more in the background. Both these types of scale usually will have a low battery indicator pop up on the screen of your bathroom scales when you need to replace the batteries.

Digital scales can last around a year without needing a change of batteries – but this of course depends on how often you use it and the type of digital scale. Smart scales typically require a battery change every 6 months or so.

For both the Digital and Smart Scales, I would recommend that you keep some batteries spare. Many people keep small stockpiles of batteries so that they do not run out.

Many people, including me (currently), do not have a bathroom extractor fan. My partner and I have lived in our new home for just over a year now and realised we didn’t have one. At first, we thought oh well, but soon after realised we needed it. We realised we needed one recently after seeing all the mildew and mould that started to develop on the walls of our bathroom. It was then that I realised while carrying out my own research into getting one that I’d create a post about picking the best bathroom extractor fan! Enjoy!

You’d think that with this much power it must have a very high SPF rating but it actually has a low rating of 0.37. It does use quite a bit of power to run this model with a power usage of 25W.

Features To Look For In A Bathroom Extractor Fan

Extraction Rate – Simply put, this is how much moisture in the air it can get rid of. This is one of the most important factors in regards to determining which fan is the best bathroom extractor fan. Higher extraction rates are great, but if too high can leave you with bad air pressure in your bathroom. This often feels like there is a cold chill in the air, which is the last thing you’d want when getting out of the shower! This of course will play a crucial role in how efficient your extractor fan is.

Decibels (How noisy is it?) – The lower this figure is the better – you want it to run as quietly as possible. I’d recommend looking for a bathroom extractor fan of up to 30db, anything higher will likely drive you insane!

SFP Efficiency – Before today, I had never heard of this SFP thing – and I bet you hadn’t either! SFP stands for Specific Fan Efficiency. SFP is a parameter that measures the energy efficiency of fan air movement systems. Basically, it is a measure of the electricity needed to power a fan, relative to the amount of air that is driven through the fan. Ultimately, the lower the SFP Efficiency rating is, the more energy-efficient the bathroom extractor fan is.

Power Usage – This is important for several reasons. One is that most people these days are giving extra thought as to how eco-friendly their home is. Therefore knowing how much energy your extractor fan drains whilst in use will be helpful towards managing this. It can also be used to give a rough idea of how much the bathroom extractor fan will cost to run in your bathroom.

Humidity Sensor – This is the thing that makes the fan turn on or off automatically when the humidity level of your bathroom reaches a certain point. The great thing with this is that it means you don’t have to manage that yourself by having to flick a switch. Therefore it powers on when it’s actually needed, which is great really. Quite a few of the best extractor fans on the market have a humidity sensor so it is definitely one to look out for.

Back-draught Shutter – A back-draught shutter is something that prevents a back-draught from getting in. Simply put, it prevents those random gusts of wind from blowing back through the extractor fan and into your bathroom, quite self-explanatory really. Definitely, something to look out for as it really helps. Imagine during winter or a cold day and a freezing cold gust of wind comes through into your bathroom while you are brushing your teeth! It is also worth mentioning that you can also fit your own shutter (bought separately if your model doesn’t have one) into the ventilation duct and they are not very expensive at all.

How to Pick the Right Bathroom Extractor Fan

With such a wide variety, how do you even pick the right bathroom extractor? How do you even know which fan you need? Below are some points that I feel will help you be able to understand what you need and make an informed decision from the bathroom extractor fans listed above!

1. Where do you want it to be? – First of all you need to decide where you want it to be. Whether you want it on the wall, on the ceiling or on your window. Most older houses have them above the toilet but I prefer mine over the shower area, but this may not always be possible.

2. Where will the Back-draught Shutter be? – The next thing to decide upon is where you want the back-draught shutter to be. As mentioned above, some extractor fans come with this. If the one you choose does not, then you will need to install one into the ducting or external grill of your bathroom extractor fan.

3. What features do you want it to have? – Next you need to think about the kinds of  features you want. There are all kinds of different features that exist so it comes down to picking what you and your household will need. I’d recommend going for the bathroom extractor fan that meets the following requirements:

1. a Low SFP rating
2. a High extraction rate
3. Includes a back-draught shutter (just a lot easier)

4. Who will install it? – Unfortunately, unless you have the technical knowledge (and necessary qualification), as with any electrical product, you will need to get the product fitted by a Qualified Electrician. However, if you happen to be a qualified electrician yourself then great! I certainly wish I was – I’m sure I’d save a lot more money! Here is a great guide to fitting a bathroom extractor fan.

Do I Need a Bathroom Extractor Fan?

This depends on several factors but most of the time the answer is yes. The risk of not having one means that you run the risk of structural damp and mould in your property – something that can easily cost thousands to repair, which could have been easily avoided with a simple extractor fan.

Modern building regulations require the fitting of such an extractor fan to new build properties for this reason. That said, there are many older buildings that do not have such a fan in place (I know as I recently moved into one!). If this is the case then these are your options:

1. Install a Window Fan (essentially a hole in your window where a fan fits in)
2. Install a Ducted Wall Fan (the more common solution, where the air travels through a duct to outside)
3. Install a Ceiling Bathroom Extractor Fan (can also be ducted too)

How Do I Install a Bathroom Extactor Fan?

The simple answer is if you have to ask then you need to get a Qualified Electrician. As mentioned above if you happen to be one then here is a simple and generic guide on how to do so.

Please note that it will, of course, vary depending on the product you buy so it is advised to check the installation manual that comes with it.

How Much Does it Cost to Install a Bathroom Extractor Ban?

According to several online quote websites, it costs around £250-300 on average to install a bathroom extractor fan. This cost includes things like cost of ducting materials, labour and duration. This figure is merely an estimate and I would advise that you get several quotes from local reputed companies/qualified electricians before making a choice.

What Size of Extractor Fan Do I Need?

This would depend on how big your bathroom is. The standard size of a bathroom extractor fan is 100mm. Therefore a fan this size will be more than suitable and work with most grills and ducting. However, if you have a bigger bathroom you can also get larger fans at 125mm or even 150mm which are most often used for bigger bathrooms or even industrial-scale extraction.

How Do I Clean My Bathroom Extractor Fan?

In order to clean your bathroom extractor fan following these steps:

1. Turn off the power supply
2. Detach the grill by removing the screws/clips
3. Wipe the surfaces using a fairly wet or soapy cloth
4. Ensure that the fan blades can move freely
5. Refit the grill cover

Many people also use things like a hoover to pick up dust and dirt from inside but be careful with this method as you may damage your extractor fan!

Cleaning your bathroom might not be the most preferred task for any of us; but still, it is something we as a whole need to do sooner or later!

We put this thorough guide together for this very reason and hope that it helps you learn the most ideal approach to cleaning your bathroom, as well as potentially giving you a few tips to keep your bathroom clean and free from germs and bacteria for a long time.

Before we begin, we suggest that you get your hands on some gloves and some decent eye protection because safety must always be your top priority. You should also make sure that your bathroom is well ventilated, so it would help if you crack open a window or switch your bathroom exhaust fan on. Finally, you can’t clean without a decent bathroom or shower cleaner.

Preparing Your Bathroom For Cleaning

1. Tidying away your everyday bathroom items

Before you begin to clean your bathroom, the first thing you should do is remove any of the clutter which could hamper your cleaning. This can include things like bottles of shampoo, shower gel and any other bathroom accessories you might have in or around the bathtub.

You may also have a bath mat on the floor or towels on the towel rail. Any items that usually sit on your bathroom vanity or sink area like hand soap, mouthwash and so on – you get the point!

Tidying this stuff away will provide you with a nice clear space, free from obstructions, allowing you to fully focus on your cleaning without the worry of knocking anything over or getting it dirty.

2. Dealing with the Dust

You’ll also have to dust all your bathroom surfaces to eliminate any dust or dirt that may have built up over time. This can easily be completed with a quick wipe with some damp paper towel or j-cloth. When you’ve done this, you can sweep or vacuum up the dirt from the floor.

With any room, not just your bathroom, it’s essential to dust the surfaces before you clean. Otherwise, the dust that gathers can fly around the room and ruin all your hard work!

3. Let cleaning products sit on tougher areas

Lastly, to ensure that you make the best use of your time and energy, you should apply your cleaning products to all the areas that will need the most scrubbing. These will usually include your taps, shower, bathtub, sink and any other regions where build-up deposits have developed.

For the especially tough to clean areas of your bathroom, e.g. limescale deposits, we would suggest applying a white vinegar and water solution, mixing half of each in an equal concentration.

Time to Clean Your Bathroom

1. Wipe Down your Surfaces

Now that you have gotten now cleared and tidied your bathroom, it is now time to clean your bathroom surfaces! Here you’ll want to take a cleaning cloth or sponge and wipe down your racks, countertops and shelves with your favourite cleaning spray.

While cleaning your surfaces, we generally suggest starting from the highest point in your bathroom and working your way down. Cleaning in such a way means that, if any dirt and grime you’ve cleaned from higher areas fall down to lower surfaces, it is easier to clean them later.

When it comes to your shower glass panels or windows, you should aim to use an alternate cleaner and cloth (or squeegee) – if applicable.

2. Cleaning your Bathtub and Shower

As mentioned earlier, it may sometimes be best to apply your cleaning products to the taps and bathtub before you begin cleaning, allowing them enough time to eliminate most of the grime easily or at least loosen tough-to-clean grime a little. If you followed this step, you can use a damp cloth or sponge to clear away the grime and then rinse away with water.

If it has been a while since you last cleaned your bathtub, then you may need to put some elbow grease in – especially when scrubbing the taps! In the event that grime has deposited between your bathroom tiles, you will need to scrub here too. For this, you can use an old toothbrush or any other delicate brush, the tough side of the sponge will also work fine. Spray some cleaner (grout cleaner would be great) onto the grout and let it sit for around five to ten minutes or so. You would then be able to use your brush (ideally a grout brush) to scrub away the grime quite easily.

If you find that the grout has now become quite discoloured, it may be worth purchasing some grout whitener. Lastly, you want to make sure you give your shower head a good wipe as well. If it’s been a while since the last clean or it’s looking fairly dirty, it’d definitely be worth checking out our guide on cleaning your shower head.

3. Cleaning your Toilet

When cleaning your toilet, it is definitely advisable that you use a good pair of gloves and wipes only for the toilet. You will need to handle the toilet bowl first to make best use of your time. Take some toilet cleaner or bleach and pour it around the upper area of the toilet bowl, so that the cleaner can trickle down. Leave it to work for around 10 to 15 minutes or so.

Next, with the help of your toilet brush, start scrubbing the whole bowl, including the rim, until you have covered the whole surface. If you happen to have a tough layer of limescale in your toilet bowl, try some white vinegar. Simply pour the white vinegar around the whole bowl and leave it there for 3-4 hours, after that you can begin cleaning, and the limescale should begin to vanish.

Once you give your toilet a proper clean, it is very easy to maintain. I use toilet rim blocks to keep my toilet smelling clean and fresh each time it’s flushed. You can even get some cistern blocks to pop in the tank as well.

4. Don’t forget to clean the floor

After you have cleaned everything and everywhere else in your bathroom, the last task is to clean the floor. Depending on the type of floor you have, before you mop, you should sweep or vacuum the floor to eliminate any excess dirt present on the floor.

Once the floor has been swept or vacuumed, mix together your floor cleaning product of choice and some warm water into your mop bucket and dip the mop in. For best practice, ensure the mop isn’t too wet otherwise it will not clean properly and will only end up making your bathroom smell damp!

Once completed let the floor dry and you can pour away the dirty water into the toilet and flush it away. Finally, I will usually pick up any other bits of rubbish lying around and empty my bathroom bin.

How to keep your bathroom clean longterm

Now your bathroom that your bathroom is clean you need to try and keep it that way! Here are some quick tips to help maintain your bathroom, so you don’t have to keep doing hard deep cleans anymore:

1. Little and often: Do small cleans here and there – don’t let it build up!
2. Make it easier: there are so many great products that can make cleaning your bathroom easier and fairly automated. For example, I use a number of Method Bathroom Cleaning products like their shower mist which can be quickly applied after your shower and left to work its magic – no scrubbing needed.
3. Get a bathroom exhaust fan: You can very easily prevent damp building up with a good bathroom extractor fan. Damp can be quite damaging to your walls too and also even your health.
4. Stop leaving toothpaste marks: Dried toothpaste can be tough to clean later on so just quickly give your sink a rinse each time you brush your teeth.
5. Change your bathroom bin more often: Bathroom bins are usually quite small and easy to change so just make sure to take it out when it starts getting full.

Bathroom Zones are special areas or “zones” in your bathroom which indicate the level of potential danger posed to you by electrical appliances and electricity itself. As you may know, water and electricity can make quite a lethal combo. Alongside the specific instructions published in the Wiring Regulations, bathroom zones are designed to keep you and installers or contractors of any kind safe from any potential dangers that could occur. Understanding these electrical zones and the specific electrical safety guidelines for bathrooms will keep you out of harm’s way.

What are the electrical Bathroom Zones?

There are four different zones in any bathroom. The zonal aspects of each area mainly depend upon the risk in terms of how close water getting close to or potentially touching the electrical supply. If this happened, it could cause damage to the installation but also there is a risk of an electric shock. The four bathroom zones are as follows:

Bathroom Zone 0

Zone 0 is the area inside the bath or the actual shower room, inside the shower basin/tray. If there is no shower basin or tray, zone 0 is 10cm high (from the floor level) extending up to 1.2m around the fixed shower head area.

Bathroom Zone 1

Zone 1 is the area directly above the bath or shower cubicle to a height of 2.25m from the finished floor. Any fitting used in zone 1 must have a minimum rating of IPx4*, which means it is protected against water spray from all directions. If the fitting uses a 240v supply, a 30ma residual current device (RCD) must also be used to protect the circuit in this zone.

Bathroom Zone 2

Zone 2 is similar to Zone 1, in that it requires a minimum of IPX4. Zone 2 refers to the area stretching 0.6m (60cm) outside of the perimeter of the bath and to a height of 2.25m (225cm) from the floor. Furthermore, it is common practice to consider the area around a sink or wash basin, e.g. any area within a 0.6m (60cm) distance of any tap or faucet, to be considered zone 2 as well.

Bathroom Zone 3 (Outside of these Zones)

The normal rules apply outside of these zones. No IP rating is required. All circuits installed in a bathroom must be protected by a 30ma RCD (Residual Circuit Device). Although these days this is common practice and is also a requirement of Part P of the Building Regulations, it is a good idea to double-check this is the case – especially in older bathrooms.

IP Ratings Explained

In order to fully understand bathroom zones, you should first understand, or at least have a good idea of, IP ratings. The IP stands for International Protection but is more commonly known as Ingress Protection.

An IP rating is simply a number that classifies the level of protection against both liquids and solids in electrical enclosures or pieces of electronic equipment. These ratings are calculated either by the manufacturer or an approved laboratory that carries out specific tests.

The IP number itself consists of two digits. The first digit refers to the level of protection against solid objects e.g. dust. The second digit refers to the level of protection against liquids e.g. water. Typically, The higher the number is, the more robust the level of protection will be.
