Mixer Shower Buying Guide
Mixer showers are very popular thanks to their luxurious feel, look, and user experience. Unlike a power or electric shower, these don’t contain any heating elements hidden away. Instead, they function by using both your cold and hot water supply, mixing them to a degree that’s most preferable to you.
With that said, there are many factors you need to consider to be able to make an informed decision. So, here’s a buying guide covering stuff like types, installation methods, construction, and water pressure requirements — so keep reading!
Types of Mixer Showers
Mixer showers can broadly be divided into two categories i.e. manual and thermostatic ones. Let’s have a brief look at both to see what sets them apart.
Manual Mixer Showers
Manual mixer showers do well in a household with a decent hot water supply and high water pressure. It allows you to set the water to a temperature of your liking by mixing the hot and cold supplies. You get a “hot knob” (usually the one on the left) and a “cold” one (the one on the right), and you can twist the two to mix the water to your preferred shower temperature. They’re called “manual” since you don’t get to choose a temperature setting, but instead have to mix the water by yourself and by feel.
Manual mixer showers are very simple to work with, and also super easy to install.
Thermostatic Mixer Showers
Thermostatic mixer showers, on the other hand, are the more advanced version of their manual counterpart. These have a thermostatic valve that can maintain a constant temperature for your shower water, and the user has complete control over it to adjust it manually. As you can tell, it’s way more “luxurious” and easy to use than a standard manual mixer, making it the ideal choice for families, especially those with young children. Having a reliable way to control the water temperature and knowing exactly what degree it is on always helps.
The best part about these is that the temperature of your shower water doesn’t get impacted by someone using the sink in the kitchen, or the toilet flushing!
Keep in mind that thermostatic ones are generally much more expensive than manual ones, simply because of the more advanced technology and more expensive components they consist of.
Our Recommendation
If you don’t mind doing it by hand and are on a fairly tight budget, we’d suggest going with the manual one. On the other hand, if you’ve got a pretty big budget to work with and want to have the most luxurious experience possible — thermostatic mixers all the way!
Water Pressure Requirements
Aside from the type of your new mixer shower, you’ve also got to consider its water pressure requirement. Different models have varying levels of minimum water pressure, starting from 0.1 bar, and going all the way to 1.0 bar of minimum water pressure for optimal functioning. Make sure that the one you buy has pressure requirements that match what you have at your home.
Installation
Mixer showers generally tend to be pretty easy to install, especially when compared to alternatives like electric or digital showers. Nevertheless, make sure you get a model that uses a standard connection with several entry points to have compatibility with the plumbing systems you already have at home.
Shower Heads
Shower heads are a matter of personal preference, and mixer shower models can come in a variety of different designs. Some have fancy features like a rainfall effect, while others offer the unmatched convenience of a handheld design — so feel free to pick what you prefer!
Construction
Look for brass components with high-shine chrome plating in your new mixer shower, simply because they won’t rust as quickly. Plus, the chrome is very easy to wipe clean and makes the shower look premium and luxurious.
Warranty
Warranty is an important factor because, in the unlikely event that something goes wrong down the line, you want to know that you are covered. Warranties in the mixer shower market are usually around 2 years which is why we found you some models that are 5 and 10-year warranties!
What is the best mixer shower?
We found the best mixer shower to be the Mira Honesty Dual; it provides massive coverage with its massive 250mm deluge (the biggest on our list) and 110mm hand shower, features both Magni-Flo™ and CoolShield™ technology, separate controls, thermostatic temperature controls, also top of our best Mira mixer shower round up etc – it just keeps going!
What is the difference between a mixer shower and a thermostatic shower?
A mixer shower cannot react and adjust to sudden temperature changes, unlike a thermostatic shower. A thermostatic shower features a “thermostat” to do this. Both still use cold and hot water supplies it’s just that the thermostatic shower can react to temperature changes and often come with lots of other great features.
What is a manual mixer shower?
A manual mixer shower is called “manual” because you have to mix the water by yourself and by feel, using the usual two cold and hot water knobs. Most popular designs nowadays feature buttons or a dial and would technically be known as “automatic”.
How long do mixer showers generally last?
Mixer showers don’t normally have fragile components that can break or stop working even years down the line. The ceramic cartridge, however, will eventually wear itself out in about a decade, which is when you want to replace your shower.
What flow rate should my mixer shower have?
Mixer showers usually have a flow rate of between 5 to 25 litres per minute (LPM), which is quite a range due to the different models out there.
