Features To Look For In the Best Shower Heads

Most of the time, we all put up with whatever shower head comes with the shower we buy or the house we move into. But sometimes enough is enough! Some issues you might be facing could include; a weak flow, not enough spray patterns, leaking or dripping or simply a ghastly design. Here are some of the features to look for in a good shower head:

Spray Patterns – Usually the better quality and better-made shower heads will offer more than one spray pattern. You will find that quite often all the fairly decent shower heads have around 3-5 spray patterns. For me, as long as it has at least two, which is usually the standard “Rain” and “Jet”, I am happy. I like the Jet pattern for cleaning things and rinsing the bathtub/shower area. For Triton’s 5 Position Shower Head, for example, the 5 spray patterns included are Jet, Blast, Spray, Rain and Drench – which is more than enough.

Strong Water Flow/Pressure – This one seems obvious but some people are actually content with a small drizzle of water. To me and hopefully, to you the reader, a shower head that delivers a powerful water flow really makes it a good one – or at least helps it feel like a good one! The factor that determines the “power” is the kW and with other shower types, this can be several other things. That said, the shower head can often convert a weaker pressure into a stronger release of water, providing a much stronger pressure or throughput out of the shower head.

Some kind of Warranty or Guarantee – Another fairly obvious one but still, definitely worth a mention. Typically ALL products (though obviously not disposable ones!) not just shower heads, offer some kind of warranty. But the length of the warranty may vary. For example, the EocuSun 7 Mode shower head offers a lifetime warranty, whereas the Triton 3 Position offers a 1-year warranty – and that is only for use in the UK! So before you purchase, be sure to thoroughly check the warranty conditions with a fine-tooth comb!

Design – When it comes down to finding a good shower head, I always look at the design. This of course does not affect the way it works in any way but a shower head goes together with all the rest of the features of your bathroom. With most showers on the market the standard shower head that is included is just your average shower head, – which 9 times out of 10 is a very plain white one. The shower manufacturer offers colours like white or chrome because they are the most neutral colours for a bathroom, but this does not always mean it looks good OR suits your bathroom. The GROHE Rainshower Icon shower head offers a massive variety of 18 different colours, which is actually one of the only models I have seen that do something like this.

Types of Shower Head

There are many different types of shower head that exist in the market. We chose to review hand-held shower heads as these seem to be the most commonly sought after. For those that might be interested, I will go through the various types below!

Hand Held Shower Heads

As mentioned above these are what we focused on when seeking the best shower heads available. They are the most common and, in my opinion, the best option for the household. They can either be left attached to the rail for showering or removed ad-hoc for cleaning specific areas of your body, bathtub or shower well.

Fixed or Wall Mounted Shower Heads

This type of shower head is fairly self-explanatory. It is mounted to the wall. So unlike the handheld shower head, it cannot be removed from the rail it is permanently fixed (or mounted) to the wall. These aren’t great because someone will have issues showering. As it is permanently mounted it cannot totally be adjusted to suit varying heights. Usually, there will be some kind of swivel to slightly change the direction of the water but that is it.

LED Shower Heads

These can be any kind of style whether Handheld, Fixed, Rain etc. The difference is that they light up your shower well, giving you a soothing but disco shower experience! Some LED shower heads even come with sensors that indicate the temperature – which is pretty cool right?

Deluges (Rain or Rainfall Shower Heads)

This type of shower head is similar to the fixed or wall-mounted shower heads but is usually fixed above your head so it falls like rain (hence the name). These are great for a relaxing shower experience and come standard with many “dual” showers. Though for this kind of shower head you will need to have a fairly big shower enclosure/area.

Ionic or Mineral Shower Heads

This is quite a new type of shower head. It has ionic mineral balls or beads inside the shower head that the water passes through. The idea is that they purify the water, removing chlorine and other things from the water that may harm your skin. At the moment these are very popular, the Rymerce’s Ionic Shower head, for example, is a top-selling shower head!

Digital Shower Heads

Digital Shower Heads are very similar to LED shower heads but they also typically display the temperature on the handset itself and sometimes have other built-in features like a Bluetooth speaker. These shower heads are still quite lacking in my opinion and are ultimately just an LED shower head with the temperature on it!

What is the best shower head to buy right now?

This all depends on your preference! I really like the triton 5-position (this is what I am using currently) but I also love the GROHE Rainshower Icon, because it comes in lots of great colours, is scratch-resistant and comes with a massive 5-year warranty. It all depends on what you want from your shower head.

What is the highest-rated shower head?

After looking at all the top shower heads online, the highest-rated shower head seems to be the triton 5-position, across multiple different websites. This does not come as a surprise as it is fairly inexpensive compared to others, has 5 spray patterns, and has rub clean nozzles.

How do I Change the Shower Head?

It is actually very simple to do. You simply unscrew the existing one and screw on the new one. When screwing the new shower head on please be careful not to forget to use the rubber/plastic washer included with the new one as it keeps the connection secure while ensuring that water is less likely to leak or come out of the wrong place! Luckily all the big brands (including the models mentioned in this guide) are universal fit so you should have no issues installing your new shower head.

How do I Clean my Shower Head?

Cleaning your shower head can be very simple, especially as most feature rub-clean nozzles. We have put together a dedicated guide on how to clean your shower head, that details all the necessary steps you need to take.

Do I Need Multiple Spray Patterns?

This comes down to preference. I myself love having different spray patterns because it gives the option to have a different shower experience each time. This of course depends on the shower head you get or have.

I have the Triton 5 Position head so I have 5 spray patterns. As mentioned above, the 5 different spray patterns are – jet, blast, spray, rain or drench. Jet or Blast is great for cleaning the bathtub (or shower well). Another use for these two patterns is cleaning my trainers or shoes. I happen to live in an area where the grass is cut frequently and I walk my dog every day – so I tend to get a lot of grass on them! These two patterns take the grass off with ease!

Furthermore, as someone that goes to the gym quite frequently, I also find Jet to be great to relax my muscles after a crazy workout. Spray, Rain and Drench are great for overall cleaning – as well as rinsing the bathtub. These are the different ways in which I use my shower patterns. In order to see if you need them, it is best to have a think and see if they could help you somehow. That said, most decent shower heads on the market will have more than one so it is nice to have the option.

Can Shower Heads with Low Water Pressure?

Yes, it can definitely help, depending on the design or model. But it is important to note that the issue will still technically exist, it’s just that the shower head itself will deliver a seemingly stronger pressure or throughput. One of the reasons we ranked the Triton Five Position top was because users found that it helped with this issue.

Please note: If you are experiencing a lower water pressure problem, you will need to consult a professional to truly get it resolved.
